BOOK CLUB: SHORT STORY BOOK CLUB #2

  • Centre for Stories 100 Aberdeen Street Northbridge, WA, 6003 Australia

Join Laurie Steed at our monthly Short Story Book Club for people who read and write short stories, as well as those who simply revel in the written word. It explores exquisite, iconic short fiction collections from the Australian literary canon, from modern classics up to soon to be published, award-winning collections such as Australia Day by Melanie Cheng. Throughout, we’ll tease out why these stories resonate, examine the greater motivations behind their work, and revelling in the joys of perfectly constructed tale.

This month we'll be looking at Ryan O’Neill’s story collection The Weight of a Human Heart, both a middle-finger to established realist prose and yet also a playful meditation on language itself. Among other things:

- A series of graphs illustrates the disintegration of a marriage, step by excruciating step

- A literary stoush – and an affair – play out in the book review section of a national newspaper

- The heartbreaking story of a Rwandan boy is hidden within his English exam paper

- A young girl learns her mother’s disturbing secrets through the broken key on a typewriter

Sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, The Weight of a Human Heart turns the rules of storytelling on their head.

Laurie Steed is the Patricia Hackett Prize winning author of You Belong Here, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, The Age, Meanjin, Westerly, Island, The Sleepers Almanac and elsewhere.
