BOOK CLUB: SHORT STORIES BOOK CLUB - CANCELLED

  • centre for stories 100 Aberdeen Street Northbridge, WA, 6003 Australia (map)

Join Laurie Steed at our monthly Short Story Book Club for people who read and write short stories, as well as those who simply revel in the written word. It explores exquisite, iconic short fiction collections from the Australian literary canon, from modern classics such as Ryan O’Neill’s The Weight of a Human Heart through up to soon to be published, award-winning collections such as Australia Day by Melanie Cheng. Throughout, we’ll tease out why these stories resonate, examine the greater motivations behind their work, and revelling in the joys of perfectly constructed tale.

Ways of Being Here features four stories by emerging writers Rafeif Ismail, Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes, Tinashe Jakwa and Yuot Alaak, winners of last year's 'Ways of Being Here' flash fiction competition, which was open to any writer of African heritage residing in Western Australia who had less than four published stories and/or articles. The stories featured are urgent, innovative, and inimitable, distinct voices that are easy to read, but hard to forget once you've entered their worlds, words, and thoughts.

Laurie Steed is the Patricia Hackett Prize winning author of You Belong Here, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, The Age, Meanjin, Westerly, Island, The Sleepers Almanac and elsewhere.

Please read the book prior to the event. The Centre for Stories preferred bookstore is Boffins. We value our local book sellers and think they are an important part of the literary community. Boffins may not stock all of the books in our book club or the authors from our events, but you can order books through them and they will tend to your needs in a timely fashion. Please visit them here. Mention our name for 10% off!
