SHORT STORY BOOK CLUB

  • Centre for Stories 100 Aberdeen Street Northbridge, WA, 6003 Australia (map)

Join Laurie Steed at our monthly Short Story Book Club for people who read and write short stories, as well as those who simply revel in the written word. It explores exquisite, iconic short fiction collections from the Australian literary canon, from modern classics up to soon to be published, award-winning collections such as Australia Day by Melanie Cheng. Throughout, we’ll tease out why these stories resonate, examine the greater motivations behind their work, and revelling in the joys of perfectly constructed tale.

This month, we’ll be looking at Fine, by Michelle Wright, an exercise in restraint, and a delicate, considered meditation on good people working through difficult circumstances.

Fine shines a light into the quiet corners of human life. By observing the traumas, doubts and isolation of its characters, the book reveals the strength and fragility of people and relationships.

These stories explore the silent sorrows, desires and regrets that we choose to hide when we say that we are 'fine'. As they describe moments big and small in the lives of ordinary people, they invite us to think about who we are when no one is looking.

Laurie Steed is the Patricia Hackett Prize winning author of You Belong Here, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, The Age, Meanjin, Westerly, Island, The Sleepers Almanac and elsewhere.

Please read the book prior to the event. Boffins is our preferred bookstore, however they cannot guarantee availability. Give them a call on 9321 5755 to confirm the availability of the book.
