AUSTRALIAN SHORT STORY FESTIVAL

  • The Centre for Stories 100 Aberdeen Street Northbridge, WA, 6003 Australia (map)

The Australian Short Story Festival will be an annual weekend-long event first scheduled for 21–23 October 2016 in Perth, Western Australia. It will be held at the Centre for Stories in Aberdeen Street, the State Library of WA and the Northbridge Piazza.

As the first national event to focus exclusively on the short story form, this festival offers a unique contribution to the nation’s literary culture, as well as a timely response to the current resurgence of this aesthetically exacting narrative form. It will bring together short story writers, storytellers, publishers, and editors of literary magazines, as well as readers, and will connect audiences with both Australian and international short story writers. The Festival is committed to a culturally-inclusive program ensuring speakers and audiences come from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Key events include sessions with prominent writers such as Ryan O'Neill, Ellen van Neerven, Cate Kennedy, Paddy O'Reilly, Fiona McFarlane and Isabelle Li. There will also be publishing advice with three independent publishing houses, the launch of Westerly Magazine: New Creative issue, a collaboration between local storytellers and raconteurs, a celebration of five years of the Margaret River Short Story Competition, and a street reading walk of Northbridge.

In 2017 the Festival will be held in Adelaide.
