A MILE IN MY SHOES: KALIYUGAN PATHMANATHAN

After 21 days on a boat, Kaliyugan Pathmanathan finally saw landmass before he was put away in immigration detention for 17 months. He reflects on the isolation he felt in the detention centres, including time on Christmas Island, and what it was like to finally have his freedom back.

'I remember spending New Year's Eve in Melbourne with a friend and there were all these fireworks and people being happy and I just couldn’t be happy. I still have issues in places like big celebrations. I can't be happy because that just reminds me of other people stuck without that happiness and freedom.'
