Please join the Sudanese Cultural Group Until We Return in the launch of ‘The Past’ by Dawoud Kodi
We will be joined by guest speakers Dr. Vivienne Glance and Dr. Samuel Morad Trukash. The evening will also feature songs from Sudanese Vocal Group Until We Return, and traditional dance from the Nuba Mountains.
As a child, Dawoud witnessed his dad carrying out some very strange rituals that he did not understand. One morning when he was only six, he was woken by his mother and told that he and his father were leaving for Egypt. It would be many months before Dawoud and his father were joined by his mother and other siblings. Eventually they all migrated to Australia.
As he grew older, Dawoud became increasingly curious about his father’s rituals, his mysterious illnesses, and the reasons surrounding their sudden departure from Sudan. The family settled into Australian life and one day in church, prompted by the pastor, his father told the congregation a story that led Dawoud to ask him the questions that had been nagging him all his life. This is his story.
Dawoud Kodi was born in Sudan in 1993, the sixth child in a family of eight. He arrived in Melbourne in 2004, where he began learning English, a language he is still mastering. He is currently doing a BSc (Curtin University) and works as an nurse. The Past is his first book.
