Workshop: The Art of Story Writing for Teens

Workshop activities are designed to introduce teens to basic storytelling fundamentals and help them explore their voices in an imaginative and safe environment. This workshop is aimed at teens between the ages of 12-16 and is particularly suited for Years 9 and 10.

What We’ll Cover:

·      Tapping into your imagination and where to look for inspiration

·      Why read? Examples of effective writing

·      Elements of a good story

·      Storytelling

·      Engaging and challenging writing exercise and discussion


Materials Needed

·      Something to write with e.g pens, pencils

·      Notebook / paper

·      Laptop / iPad / iPhone / Camera (if you want to use these - video and photos can aid storytelling, participants to be responsible for personal belongings including electronic items)

·      Snacks provided but please bring a water bottle and lunch

·      Curiosity and a sense of fun



·      Think about stories and what story you want to tell

·      Collect images, video clips, magazines to help you write your story

Instructor: Nadia King is committed to helping teens discover their own truth. Her debut book, Jenna’s Truth is used in high schools in WA and Great Britain and designed to stimulate conversations around the issues of bullying, cyberbullying and teen suicide. Kirkus Review has described Jenna’s Truth as ‘..a deeply, affecting, valuable story and educational tool.’

Nadia was born in Dublin, Ireland. She has a background in journalism and media relations, and has written for magazines in Europe, Australia, and the US.
