Join Laurie Steed at our monthly Short Story Book Club for people who read and write short stories, as well as those who simply revel in the written word. It explores exquisite, iconic short fiction collections from the Australian literary canon, from modern classics such as Ryan O’Neill’s The Weight of a Human Heart through up to soon to be published, award-winning collections such as Australia Day by Melanie Cheng. Throughout, we’ll tease out why these stories resonate, examine the greater motivations behind their work, and revelling in the joys of perfectly constructed tale.
In our first collection, Heat and Light, author Ellen van Neerven takes readers on a journey that is mythical, mystical and still achingly real. In ‘Heat’, we meet several generations of the Kresinger family and the legacy left by the mysterious Pearl. In ‘Water’, van Neerven offers a futuristic imagining of a people whose existence is under threat. While in ‘Light’, familial ties are challenged and characters are caught between a desire for freedom and a sense of belonging. Heat and Light presents a surprising and unexpected narrative journey while heralding the arrival of an exciting new talent in Australian writing.
Laurie Steed is the Patricia Hackett Prize winning author of You Belong Here, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, The Age, Meanjin, Westerly, Island, The Sleepers Almanac and elsewhere.
