THE MONTHLY is a story-telling and sewing circle that helps to make a real difference for girls. The group sews feminine hygiene kits that are sent to girls and women around the world who need them. This is also a chance for us to share stories about making the transition from girlhood to womanhood, not necessarily about periods but about first loves and school crushes, best friends and sibling rivalry, and anything else along the way.
A kit is made up of a cotton bag which comprises two waterproof lined, cotton shields; eight flannelette pads; a Ziploc plastic bag; a pair of underpants; a face cloth and a bar of soap.
Making the kits does not require high level sewing skills. The sewing required is simple sewing using a basic sewing machine. Apart from sewing, members of the group may be required to help with cutting out, packing kits and organizing boxes for posting. The main requirement is a commitment to improving the lives of women and girls who do not have the resources to buy sanitary products to manage their menstruation.
If you have a sewing machine or an overlocker you can bring along to class, that would be a great help. You could also bring along scissors, any remnants of cotton fabric, flannelette and sewing thread.
The Monthly is hosted by NINA BOYDELL. Nina was a volunteer with the Bougainville Women’s Federation during 2013 – 2016. During this time she observed the difficulty women and girls have in Bougainville with managing their monthly cycle in a dignified and hygienic way. As a result, she started making sanitary kits for the women, comprising of reusable, flannelette sanitary pads. On her return to Perth in mid 2016, Nina, a keen dressmaker, joined with a group of friends to continue to make the kits and to date, about 250 kits have been distributed to women in Bougainville.
