The Ngoorlark beckons us with its reeling cry, the water rises from beneath the city to haunt our tunnels and streets, the banksia, paperbark, and balga all speak to us through time and space. What is the real beneath the simulacra of nature? And how can we learn to live more harmoniously with those beings who make our home place unique. 

Join us for an afternoon of poetry, song and art which explores the swampy past of Northbridge, and how that past has influenced the modern city of today. Poets Nandi Chinna, S J Finch, and Renee Pettitt-Schipp, and musician and installation artist Mei Saraswati  present poems, songs and art from the soil and water of Perth. 

Afternoon tea will be served at the event.

Nandi Chinna is an award winning poet, and facilitates workshops on the art of Poepatetics — the practice of walking and writing in order to connect with the natural world and foster creative responses to nature. Her poetry and essays have been widely published in national and international journals and anthologies and her poetry has been broadcast on ABC Radio National’s Poetica.   


Renee Pettitt-Schipp is an emerging writer who has been widely published throughout Australia.  Renee is currently enjoying a cross-discipline approach, taking poetry into unexpected places. Renee has been recognised through many awards, including her recent short-listing for both the ACU poetry prize and the inaugural Dorothy Hewett manuscript prize.  


SJ Finch is a writer, artist, and producer. He has been published in Cottonmouth, Westerly, Sitelines, Voiceworks, and The Kid on the Karaoke Stage (Fremantle Press). In 2009, Finch was a co-founding member of both the creative journal dotdotdash and Aunty Mabel's zine distro. He co-directed the interactive Fringe World 2015 performance Friendquest, curated Anthologia, an exhibition of floriographic poetry, and launched The Grr Project, an ongoing nomadic residency where he lives in a self-made traveling yurt called grr.  His practice is often highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary, focused on creating temporary micro-communities and demonstrations of kindness and care. 

Mei Swan Lim entered the arts world through the moniker ‘Mei Saraswati’ in 2007. Self taught in the craft of making electronic music - she collages field recordings, voice, sampling and instrumentation. She seeks to investigate the intersections of natural and built environments and explore music-making as a self-directed therapy.  Her latest musical release Devotions samples natural sounds from the Swan River, Mullaboo Beach, Joondalup and Wanneroo and intertwine them with spiritual writings from the Baha’i faith.
